The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) and ECOSY - Young European Socialists are deeply concerned by the war that has exploded these last days in South Ossetia and expanded into Georgia.
We call for an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Georgia, the withdrawal of troops from the conflict zone, and an immediate start to negotiations between Russia and Georgia, with the mediation of the international community in order to find a peaceful solution in the framework of international law. We strongly believe that the United Nations should take immediate action to stop the war and engage the different actors of the region and international community to begin dialogue and avoid violence.
We also expect a serious initiative for peace from the European Union, which should remember the Caucasus area and its people beyond energy and financial interests.
Most of all, we express our deep sorrow for the loss of human lives and the suffering of innocent civilians in the region, as well as our strong concerns about the protection of women and children. We remain in solidarity with our member organizations and all progressive young people in the region, and we are committed to invest even stronger efforts in our cooperation with them for a better future of peace and democracy.
